JANUARY 2008

 

Valentine’s Dinner is set for February 14th, at the Bessemer VFW.  The cost will be $15 per person ($30 per couple)

Hors D Oeuvre will be served from 5:30 to 6:30, with dinner at 6:30.

The menu will be

Prime Rib or Grilled Salmon with dill sauce

Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Green Beans Almandine

Rolls

Salad

Dessert

We are limiting the number of reservations this year, so call as soon as possible with your reservation.

If you missed this last year, you will not want to miss it this year.  A great time was had by all who attended last year.

Don’t wait until the last minute, we can only serve so many.

-50/50 winner was Pat Betzer of Merrill WI, $745.50 was awarded

 

-The Booby Hatch sponsored music on Jan 8th and Johnson’s MotorSports sponsored a guided tour, and the VFW had a burger night.

-The Poker/Cash run was sponsored by: the Booby Hatch, Leather & Gift Store, Abelman Clothing & Footwear, Dairy Queen, Stempihar Brothers, Bread of Life, Boulder Creek Golf Course, Sunday Lake Supermarket, Bessemer VFW, The American Legion, JJ’s Yale Bar, Uncle Sams, The Gin Mill Bar, and the Pit Stop.  The WUPCVB donated $500.00 towards the poker run.

-The winners were:

-1st– Lou Giackino or Ironwood ($400.00)

-2nd– Mike Perttunen of Bessemer ($300.00)

-3rd– Angie Hill of Ironwood ($100.00)

-4th– Tony Ossanna of Bessemer ($50.00)

 

Many calendars have not been picked up and for those who want to purchase one, there are still some available at $10.00 each.

 

NOVEMBER 2007

 

The Bessemer Chamber of Commerce has announced the 2007 Holiday Decorating Contest.  The Bessemer Chamber invites all residents of Bessemer and Bessemer township to decorate their homes for Christmas and enter to win prizes.

Deadline for entry is December 15th.  Enter by calling the chamber office at 663-0026, emailing the chamber at bessemerchamber@hotmail.com or by mailing a note to the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 243, Bessemer, MI  49911.  All entries must include name, address, and phone number.  Judging will be in the evening of Dec 18th and/or Dec 19th.

Please have your lights on!

The Annual Membership Banquet will be on December 5th at the Bessemer VFW.  If you did not receive an invite, please call Linda at 663-4549.  Officers will be elected at this time.

DECEMBER 2007

 

The Chamber held it’s annual membership banquet December 5th at the Bessemer VFW.

 

After social hour and a delicious dinner of ribs and chicken, catered by Tacconelli’s To Go, Linda Nelson gave an inspirational and detailed outline of the events the Bessemer Chamber is involved in, supports, and sponsors.

 

Events the Bessemer Chamber is involved in are, The Valentine’s Dinner, the Chicken Dinners, The Easter Egg Hunt, Scholarship Donation Relay for Life, 4th of July Float and activities, Community Calendar, and Hay Ride, new chamber brochures.

 

Linda thanked many people including Dana Cebolski, her “right hand,” and outgoing secretary, for helping out with all the activities.  Without her help this past year would not have been as successful as it was.

 

Nelson also offered thank yous to:

 

Peter Perkovich and Al Gaiss for their support, being there to walk, sell tickets and driving people to and from dinners.

 

Todd Meinke and Cory Aspinwall, for donating time and labor to fix up the soffit and facia at the new Chamber office, and Dick Steiger for donating towards materials.

 

Cheryl Sowels, Anne Brown, Larry and Veronica Miskovich, Candy Syder, Glen Pavlovich, Lisa and Mark Selin, Mary Calhoun, Betty, Jim, and Scotty Cebolski, for the time working at the Chamber office, coming to the meetings, working on the float, and whatever else they could do to help.

 

Corey Forslund for his help working on the website and all his computer help.

 

Chris Bergquist and Donna Matrella for heading up the Pumpkin Fest, and George Boline for heading up the 4th of July committee.

 

Linda thanked her husband Neal for all the endless hours he has giver her, her son Alec, her nieces Brittney and Hannah Cebolski, for help with painting the office, cleaning and cutting the grass.

 

Linda thanked her mother Karin Cebolski for her endless help at all the events as well as her love and support.

 

Linda expressed thanks to those who donated towards the Easter Egg Hunt, and to the youth group for filling the eggs; the First National Bank, Gogebic Range Bank, Gogebic County Federal Credit Union, and the 4th of July committee for donating the candy that was handed out on the Chamber float.

 

Tom Chatel, from the DDA, was recognized for his help in acquiring the new building which now houses the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce. Also recognized were the rest of the DDA Blayne Kern, Doug Olsen, Bob Abelmlan, Randy Gierl. Johnny Stempihar, and Jim Trudgeon.

 

Sponsors of the Business after 5 were  thanked; these businesses included the Booby Hatch, Cebolski Construction,  Wakefield News/Bessemer Pick & Axe, The Plywood Corporation, Leather & Gift, Johnson MotorSports,  Mark’s Car Care, JJ’s Yale Bar, Meinke Construction, and the Americcan Legion and Bessemer VFW for donating their facilities for various events and meetings.

 

The Bessemer Chamber of Commerce honored Gold Members; The Bessemer Plywood Corporation as “Business of the Year,” and the 4th of July committee and “Individuals of the Year.”

 

Officers were appointed for the 2008 year, including Linda Nelson as President, Al Gaiss as Vice-president, Veronica Miskovich as Secretary, and Pete Perkovich as Treasurer.

 

“It’s been a great year for the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce, and we look forward to an even more exciting 2008.  We welcome new businesses and individuals to join.” Nelson said.”

OCTOBER 2007

 

Community Calendars are ready for pickup!  Look for the office to be open or call Linda at 663-4549.

 

The membership banquet will be on December 5th, 2007 at the Bessemer VFW.  Watch for your invite.

 

The sleigh ride is set for December 22nd!  Meet at the Bessemer VFW.  More details soon!

 

The 2008 Sled Fest will be held in January.  Bessemer will hold activities on Jan 8th.

The Chamber has made a $100 donation to the Bessemer Band Shell.  Please consider donating also.

SEPTEMBER 2007

 

Community Calendars are for sale for $10.  Call Linda with your names and birthdays and/or anniversaries.  Deadline to order is Sept 13th.

AUGUST 2007

 

The Bessemer Chamber of Commerce Float won second place in the Bessemer 4th of July parade!  Great job to all those involved.

 

The Chamber is still looking for volunteers to man the new office on US 2—call Linda at 663-4549 for more info.

 

The Relay for Life Team did a wonderful job!!  Thanx to all!!!

 

Another  Chicken Dinner!!  Mark your calendars for September 10th at the Bessemer American Legion from 4-7:30 pm.  Dinner will include 1/4 chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, roll, and dessert.  Adults $6.00, children 5-12 only $4.00 for 2 drumsticks and sides.  Children under 5 only $2.00.  Advance tickets a must.  Contact Linda at 663-4549 Dana at 663-4196 or Al at 667-0802.

 

 

JUNE 2007

 

The 2007 Bessemer Chamber of Commerce Community Service Scholarship recipient is Jeff Hannigan.  The Arion’s Award was given to Jenny Adams.  CONGRATULATIONS and GOOD LUCK to both!

 

The move to the NEW OFFICE was successful!  The office opened on Friday May 25th, and is open when a volunteer is available.  Do you enjoy visiting with people?  Why not do it by volunteering at the Chamber Office?  Contact Linda at 663-4549 if interested.

 

We are looking for someone to spearhead a concession stand during the 4th of July festival.  Can you help in any way or even just work for an event?  Contact Linda at 663-4549.

APRIL 2007

 

The Chamber Office will be moving to the highway into the old Larry’s Barber Shop building.  Tentative opening will be Memorial Day weekend.  We will staff the office with volunteers.  If you are available, sign up how!  Email Linda at llnelson61@sbcglobal.net with your times and/or questions. 

 

The Relay for Life will be on June 8th and 9th, 2007 at the Gogebic Community College.  If you are interested in being a part of this event in any way, please email Linda at llnelson61@sbcglobal.net.

We are planning an Easter Egg Hunt for the area children on March 31st at 10 am at the AD Johnston High School  The Chamber will provide plastic eggs filled with goodies, as well as hot chocolate and cookies.

Mark your calendar for the Business After 5 on Tuesday, March 13th, 2007 at the Booby Hatch.  This one will be sponsored by the Booby Hatch and The Wakefield News/Bessemer Pick & Axe.  All employees of Chamber members are invited to attend.

 

We plan to put together an Easter Egg Hunt for the area children.  Would you like to help out it any way??  Attend the next meeting or email Linda or Dana.

JANUARY 2007

APRIL 2008

 

We will now be publishing ads in the Bessemer Banner and The Wakefield News/Bessemer Pick N Axe promoting our areas, suggestions are welcome.

 

The Bessemer Chamber would like to see a float entered into the 4th of July parade in Bessemer this summer again.  Last year we took second place and we hope to have some creative person take over this great project for this year.  Let us know if you want to do it.

 

The Chamber has also taken over the Red, While, and Blue concessions stand.  We are looking at repairing the concession and having it open during the 4th of July Celebration in Bessemer.  Consideration is also be given to having it at the Gogebic County Fair, information has been requested from the Fair Office.

 

We are looking for businesses who are interested in participating the  Poker Run for the 4th of July.  The participation cost is $50.  Please contact Linda at 663-4549 or email the chamber for more information.

 

The Pit Stop and Gin Mill will be hosting this year’s 1/2 of New year’s Celebration—look for more details.

MARCH 2008

 

The NEW web site is up and running!!  We now have a calendar page, any chamber member or community event going on can be put on the pages.  Just send us an email and let us know the who, what, when, and where!!

 

The Easter Egg Hunt had another successful year!!  Dana and her gang put it all together.  The youth group stuffed all the eggs and the chamber members gathered at the Washing School to hide the eggs and let the children gather them.  Gail Maki again coordinated the egg decorating contest.

 

The Chamber will now be selling T-Shirts at the Bessemer 4th of July week long celebration.  We are asking the community to submit their design for the shirts.  The color of the shirts will be royal blue and 3 other colors can be used.  We request the Bessemer 4th of July be put somewhere into the design, as well as the words Chamber of Commerce.  Fuzzy Antlers will be doing the printing as well as heading u the sales of the shirts.  If you are interested in doing a design, it must be turned in by April 12th.  Submissions can be brought to Spring Creek Homes.   If you have any questions, please contact Veronica at 663-4415 of Linda at 663-4549, or email the chamber at bessemerchamber@hotmail.com.

 

The Bessemer Chamber of Commerce is offering two scholarships for 2008.

 

The first scholarship is a $500.00 Community Service Scholarship.  This scholarship will be awarded to a High School Senior enrolled in the Bessemer School District.  The requirements are:

—You must have a GPA of 2.00 or more

—You must be attending a college within 1 year

—You must be enrolled in the Bessemer School District

—You must be willing to provide the Chamber with 10 hours of community servce prior to issuing the check. 

You must submit a letter to the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce no later than April 15th, 2008, outlining why you feel you deserve the Scholarship.

The check will be paid directly to the college of your choice, after the service requirement is completed. 

The second scholarship is the Arion award.  This award is a music award that will be given to a Bessemer High School senior who is in wither band, choir, or both.  This award will be either a $250.oo check made out to the college of choice, or a $500.00 saving bond.  In order to receive the monies for this award, the recipient must provide 5 hours of community service to the Chamber of Commerce.

Examples of community service are:

—working at the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce office

—helping with the Chamber 4th of July float

—helping at the chicken dinners

—helping in the Chamber concession stand

The Community service must be completed by December 31, 2008.

A letter was written to Jim Maccani thanking him for the west end billboard and was given an honorary life time chamber membership.  Thank you Mr. Maccani.

 

Business after 4 was held on March 25th sponsored by the Pit Stop, Meinke Construction, and Floor Plans.  A great lunch was given and a great time was had by all.  The 50/50 winner was Lori Pelissero from the Gogebic Range Bank.

 

FEBRUARY 2008

 

We’re looking for community member who would be willing to donate their time to working at the Chamber office.  Our goal is to have it open 6-7 days a week and 4-8 hours a day.  The office is bigger than it looks, please consider helping out.

 

We are working on the new web site and relocation packets.  Chamber member are encouraged to put something about their business in each packet.  Item are welcome at any time.
